THE HOUSES | PAGE NAVIGATION

There are 12 houses. Each one speaks to an aspect of life and taken in order can also be seen to represent the life cycle or the growth of an individual. That is not in any way to say that someone with the majority of their planets in the 4th Quadrant (Houses 10, 11, 12) is more evolved than someone with the majority of their planets in the 1stQuadrant (Houses 1, 2, 3).

It’s not that reductive.

Each House is associated with a Zodiac Sign and then that sign’s Element + Quality + Ruler in the same exact order as the Zodiac. So Aries is associated with the First House, Taurus with the second and so on.

So, let’s say, someone has only 1 FIXED planet in their chart but has all their energy in FIXED houses. This person will still have a FIXED quality about them. This is part of the layering in. And why it’s important to understand the complexity of a natal chart.

A question I receive all the time is: I have no planets in my 7th house. Does that mean I won’t have a relationship? The answer is a resounding NO. Just because one doesn’t have energy in a particular house does not in any way mean that that aspect of their life is empty. First of all, that house is ruled by a certain sign. That sign gives clues to the nature of that aspect of life. So, for example, if one has Taurus on the 7th house cusp, their 7th house activities (marriage, partnership, projection) will be colored by Taurus qualities and values. So they’re likely to draw in committed, determined, stubborn individuals. The planets in 7th house, if there are any, will then give greater complexity and layers to that house. But the cusp remains very important.

In this section, we will explore the foci of each of the Houses. Following this, you will see a series of prompts. These questions are to support you in understanding your own chart at a deeper level.

A House Cusp is the sign that the House begins in. So, if you have, let’s say, Cancer as your Ascendant, you would have Leo on your 2nd House Cusp and Virgo on your 3rd House Cusp and so on. If you have Aquarius as your Ascendant, you would have Pisces as your 2nd House Cusp and Aries as your 3rd House Cusp. Now because there are 30 degrees in every sign (0 degrees to 29 degrees), you may have 2 different signs within each House. For example, let’s say your rising is 15 degrees Scorpio, in your 1st house you would have Scorpio from 15 to 29 degrees and then Sagittarius from 0 to 15 degrees and your 2nd House Cusp would be Sagittarius 15 degrees. Your Second House would then have Sagittarius 15 to 29 degrees and Capricorn 0 to 15 degrees and your 3rd House Cusp would be Capricorn and also contain Aquarius up to 15 degrees. So if you have, let’s say, Venus in Aquarius at 4 degrees, it would be in your 3rd House, but if you have Venus in Aquarius at 21 degrees it would be in your 4th House.

So as you’ll see below, I ask what Planets are in each House and what signs they are in. This is the reason for this.

FIRST HOUSE

Associated with Aries

Element: FIRE

Quality: CARDINAL

This is our identity. It’s how we present to the world. It can also indicate our style, facial features or particular look. It’s not necessarily the meat of our chart, but it’s who we enter a room as, our public persona. Sometimes I find that the Ascendant echoes a significant sign of one of the parents (biological or non-biological, this is about the soul journey, not biology). One can think of the 1st House as a mask, in a sense. It’s the personality that we develop in childhood as we learn to navigate the world.

Pisces First House: Easygoing + Open

SECOND HOUSE

Associated with Taurus

Element: EARTH

Quality: FIXED

The Second House reveals how we view our assets and how we value ourselves as an asset. It’s also what we earn, our income. This is not to say that those who make 10 million dollars a year have higher self-value than those who make $60,000. It’s how we relate to ourselves and skills at market value. It’s also, in the simplest terms, how we make money.

Those raised in academia or religion sometimes, for example, received negative messaging around the material world, namely that it’s superficial or sinful. Those raised in affluent homes often fall in two camps: money is god or money is the cause of our shame. Conversely, those raised in financially strained homes can carry the programming that those that possess money are evil or those that possess money are somehow superior. Any of these can distort our own natural magnetism.

Because the 2nd House deals with Money + Values, it’s often looked to for clues regarding manifestation, meaning where we may be carrying blocks regarding our own ability to call in abundance based on our own talents and gifts. *Similarly, the planet Venus also reveals how we relate to money and our ability to attract it.

How can I give myself the highest expression of this energy in order to reparent myself and come “home” to myself? For example, Sagittarius on the 4th House Cusp may mean that one feels at home “all over the world” or “in search for the truth,” where as Capricorn on the 4th House Cusp may have meant a childhood that was focused on success, achievement or discipline. This same energy can be transmuted into one feeling at home in tradition or in pursuit of a goal or in an establishment in alignment with one’s highest values or, most strongly, in one’s backbone.

TWELFTH HOUSE
